Plunging Down Under
with WAC

2023

After delivering a hard-hitting ice-hockey-themed final in Vancouver in ’22, we drew inspiration from the retro, eclectic aesthetic of the Australian milkbar for the Championship’s 15th year in sunny Melbourne.

Though milkbars are now a rare find, they remain a nostalgic symbol of chilled summer days spent grabbing sticky ice creams and pick ’n’ mix lollies between sandcastle contests and kick flip practice. This fun and nostalgic theme was the perfect fit to uniquely represent the laidback and vibrant personality that both the competition and its host city share.

For each year of the World Aeropress Championship, we help build an immersive experience that starts at digital touch points and comes together in an unforgettable world final event.

For Melbourne, the story came to life through vibrant signage, milkbar-inspired textures, and a playful abundance of stickers and language.

The WAC 23 brand is built around a series of marks nd playful set of marks inspired by retro milkbar ephemera like classic shop labels, fruit stickers, bread clips and bottle caps. The layering and ‘overuse’ of these elements helps build the vibrant and eclectic milkbar world.

The brand language for WAC 23 merges punchy, sloganesque advertising with playful nods to niche Australian slang. This fun-filled summer event is dubbed 'Plunging Down Under'. As competitors are knocked out, they’re cheekily labelled 'Sold Out' while the event serves up 'Mixed Business' for coffee lovers. Every moment brims with excitement as expressions like 'scorcha', 'crikey', and 'blimey' become the superlatives of the season at this Ripper Coffee Comp'.

Working with Ben and the studio over the last two years has been a dream. They have taken what was already a well recognized, globally adored brand to a whole new level of engagement.

We're excited to see what the future holds for our partnership and owe much of our recent success to the impactful brand identities and communication systems they've created for us.

- Grant Gamble, Creative Director, World Aeropress Championships

Founder interview with The Brand Identity

Studio

"From its humble beginnings as a one-man operation to becoming a respected name in expressive, personality-driven branding, Angel & Anchor’s journey is one that TBI has been thrilled to follow. As the Belfast-based design studio celebrates its 10th anniversary, we sat down with Founder & Creative Director Ben Connolly to reflect on this decade of creative evolution. And what a decade it’s been! In this comprehensive interview, Connolly looks back on the studio’s growth, vital lessons learned, and his shift from hands-on designer to Creative Director. In the run-up to revealing Angel & Anchor’s refreshed brand identity and new website, he also reflects on how both the studio and he himself have transformed over the years – from wrestling with perfectionism to embracing collaboration and nurturing meaningful, long-lasting relationships."

Closing our side-hustle, Final Final
Studio

After five years, we are closing our brand on the side, Final Final. It was our place to learn how to design and source products, a break from client work, and another brand to grow over a longer period of time.

As A&A continues, it’s becoming harder to put our all in to Final Final. It’s time to move on and clear a bit of desk space!

As part of the close, we have a huge sale online, with huge savings. Grab some early Christmas gifts here.

Our work for World Aeropress Championship gets featured by It’s Nice That
Press

“Coffee and graphic design has had somewhat of a destructive relationship down the trend cycle since the ‘third-wave coffee’ boom in the 2000s. Shops began to look sleek and built up a name for themselves as being trendy, and a bit unfriendly. That’s why the WAC is a breath of fresh air. While Angel & Anchor are only a few years into their relationship with the organisation, they are bringing some joviality into both industries.”

“A new niche trend seems to be emerging in the creative world. Plucked from the world of vintage television, please welcome packaging in the shape of VHS tapes. Just when we thought we’d seen all there was to see in the arena with Love’s Andy Warhol TV-inspired skincare packaging, Belfast-based branding studio Angel & Anchor has knocked it out of the park with an entirely different take on the concept
